Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala
The Central University of Himachal Pradesh is established under the Central
Universities Act 2009 (No. 25 of 2009) enacted by the Parliament. The University is
funded and regulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University
became functional with the assumption of charge by the first Vice Chancellor on 20 th
January 2010. The Motto of the University is “नेति-नेति, चरैवेति-चरैवेति” which means
that one should make continuous and untiring efforts for progress and development.
One should never stop in acquisition of wisdom and skills that one receives from any
source and any means in the life. The Central University of Himachal Pradesh is
established with a Vision to be recognised as a ‘Research University’ with greater
emphasis on creation of knowledge vis-à-vis revival of Indian Traditional Knowledge
and Practices. The university is aimed at providing equitable and inclusive access to
multidisciplinary higher education for all with a focus on quality, excellence and
relevance. The university envisions its role in preparing future global citizens with
strong commitmen for human values by way of ensuring fairness, transparency and
accountability in its academic and administrative affairs. The Headquarter of the
University is located in Dharamshala, District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. The
University currently houses thirty three teaching Departments/Centres across twelve
different schools and 03 Chairs through which it offered/proposes 05 Undergraduate
(UG), 28 Postgraduate (PG), 29 Research Degree (RD) programmes, 02 B.Voc.
Programmes, 07 PG Diploma Courses and 12 Certificate Programmes. Presently,
the academic activities of the University are being run from Academic Blocks at
Dharamshala (including Shahpur) and Dehra while administrative office is located in
Dharamshala. The Academic Blocks of the University are being equipped with state
of the art lecture theatre, seminar rooms, conference hall, office space/workstations,
faculty rooms, laboratories and IT infrastructure. The University has two functional
open access libraries namely, Acharya Raghuveer Pustkalaya and Prof. S. R.
Ranganathan Pustkalaya at Dharamshala and Dehra respectively. They are being
further develop with adequate number of books, journals and reference material
related to the disciplines in which Programmes of Study are being offered. These are
being enhanced and upgraded to provide e-learning resources. The library has
INFLIBNET facility for accessing online journals. The University has NKN
connectivity and its campuses are LAN and Wi-Fi enabled under Campus Connect. It
is equipped with Video Conferencing facility. The University is following Choice
Based Credit System as per the UGC guidelines. The Research Degree
Programmes are remarkably innovative whereby all research scholars are required
to earn credits through course work, published work, dissertation/ thesis etc.
Webinars and invited lectures for students’ enrichment were a regular feature of the
University. Cultural programmes, sports activities and other extra-curricular activities
are also organised regularly. The faculty members of the University have received
substantive research grants and published research papers in journals of
international repute with high impact factor. The faculty members regularly
participate in seminars/conferences/symposia/workshops/refresher programmes not
only as participant, but mainly as resource person / experts. The university has well
defined mission which has helped in organizing various activities and realizing the
vision of the university. The university has achieved many milestones in the recent
past. The university is accredited with A+ Grade with CGPA of 3.42 and has been
accorded graded autonomy by the UGC. The university is a pioneer in implementing
various recommendations of NEP-2020. The university has already a
multidisciplinary nature and promotes holistic development of leaners through varied
kinds learning activities and teaching-learning in various languages. The university is
promoting IKS through various academic activities and making efforts to revive IKS
through research endeavours.
